Before our babies arrived (which feels like a lifetime ago!), there was a point in our pregnancies where our usual workouts didn’t always feel right in our bodies. We craved movement, but we wanted to do it in the most mindful way possible and focus on strengthening the muscles we’d need for labor and delivery.

We spent our second & third trimesters exploring a bunch of prenatal workouts in SF, both separately and together (fun fact: that’s how we became friends!). Below are our top 3 picks based on our own experiences, and we’ve also included a list of all the city’s prenatal classes we’ve since come across.

1. Prenatal Yoga w/ Jane Austin

Jane Austin (yes, that’s her real name!) is a legend in the Bay Area when it comes to all things prenatal. She teaches 4 prenatal classes a week at Yoga Tree in the Mission (plus baby + me right after) and had us hooked from our very first class. Expect gentle yoga stretches to help prepare the body for birth, along with fun tidbits and advice from Jane’s own experience as a mom and midwife. 2. Pre/Postnatal Pilates @ Mighty Pilates

The pre/postnatal reformer class at Mighty is a great balanced workout for both expectant and new moms. We attended these classes throughout our pregnancies for when we wanted a little more challenge than Prenatal Yoga but not quite the intensity of barre. Since you’re on the machines, the classes are kept small, plus they have eucalyptus towels for post-workout, which living with toddlers sounds like the best thing in the world right now.

3. Prenatal Yoga @ The Mindful Body

We religiously attended Rachel Yellin’s Monday evening class during our pregnancies, and while she’s no longer teaching to pursue her own childbirth education business, The Mindful Body is known for its prenatal yoga, and you really can’t go wrong with any of their instructors. Expect gentle stretching and education on labor relaxation techniques, with the opportunity to hear from other expecting mothers. This studio also offers workshops and prenatal massages, which is always a nice treat!
