Happy Monday, mamas! We are so excited to bring you our next studio review, and let’s just say, this one makes us feel lucky to live in a city with such amazing resources for mamas who want to keep moving safely and effectively pre-and-post pregnancy.
You’ve probably heard of the The Lotus Method because it’s the one and only fitness brand in the bay area that caters exclusively to future, expecting and new mamas. motherhood is their bread and butter, they’re really good at what they do, offering one-on-one personal training sessions to clients. however, we were surprised to learn that they also offer small group fitness classes at their four studios throughout SF and the east bay, with a class-only membership option at their marina and oakland locations.
We took the signature class from TLM’s founder, Caitlin Ritt, and absolutely loved the workout. Caitlin’s method was so well thought out with various circuits that focused on functional movements specific to a pregnant or new mama’s body and overall lifestyle. Things like picking up your child, breastfeeding, and also preparing your body for a better pregnancy and labor are all addressed in the workout, using mostly your own bodyweight, light weights and cables.
The 1-hour class is kept small (8 people max at their Marina studio) so that postural alignment can be accessed in each student. Caitlin also provided great breathing cues to help us find deeper pelvic floor and TVA engagement. Overall, the class was harder than we were expecting…even as active moms who are 16 and 17 months postpartum, we left feeling like we got a good workout.
tlm’s union street studio had amazing facilities...lots of natural light in the large workout space, with a fully-stocked bathroom and changing room for getting ready post-workout. what we loved most was that every mama there seemed to know each other. let’s face it…being a new mom can be lonely at times, so the community they’ve built is equally as valuable as the workout!
tlm believes that since Every pregnancy and postpartum experience is unique, mamas deserve and need a tailored approach to fitness.
the lotus method doesn’t allow drop-ins, since women first need to be assessed by one of their pre/postnatal exercise specialists and complete an onboarding session. this includes education on diaphragmatic breathing, Pelvic Floor concerns, diastasis recti, as well as pain surrounding pregnancy and motherhood such pelvic, low back, round ligament pain, etc.
personal training is offered every day at each studio, with classes held 6 days/week. and the best part? you can bring your pre-crawling baby to any session. if your baby gets fussy, caitlin or one of the other trainers will hold and rock them so mama can still get a great workout in. talk about full service!

membership options: signature experience - one-on-one training sessions + small group classes: starts at $499/month; empowerment collective - small group class option (only available at marina & oakland studios): $279 for 10 classes (or $28 per class)

also good for: moms who want to workout safely during pregnancy or return to a high level of activity postpartum
onboarding; all new members are required to attend an onboarding session (class only option included). it’s held on Saturdays (Marina) and Sundays (Oakland) at 8am, priced at $50 (credited towards membership if you sign up).
overall, we loved the lotus method’s union street studio and signature class, as well as their mission to support women with safe and tailored workouts throughout their journey to and through motherhood.
