things to do

Interview with Mama, Holistic Nutritionist and Parsley Health Coach (3).png

Have you mamas been to the Civic Center lately? It’s underwent quite a transformation, and is now an awesome place to take the kiddos. There’s the SF Public Library with an amazing children’s center, not one but TWO new playgrounds, and now a Bi-Rite Cafe to cap it all off with a creamy cone! We think we know where our next mommy & me day will be…

Inside the library on the second floor, there’s a HUGE children’s center with story time running almost daily. Storyteller Jim is as animated as they come, so you will be entertained just as much as the kids. There’s also a clean bathroom upstairs with changing tables. Below is story time schedule, but know that you can access the library’s children’s center every day of the week, even on Sundays.

  • Family Storytime - All Ages: Tues @ 10:30am, Thurs 10:30am (Spanish), Thurs 11:15am (Cantonese), Sat 11am

  • Toddler Tales: Mon + Weds 10:30am

  • Baby Rhyme Time: Thurs 3:30pm

Last year, not one but two new playgrounds opened just across from the library in Civic Center Plaza. Combined they cost $10 MILLION to renovate…that’s more than City Hall cost to build in the early 1900s- times three!

Both playgrounds have everything you could want, including slides, swings (including bucket swings and a large saucer swing), and multiple climbing structures. Designed around nature and weather themes, the playgrounds feature a cool modern vibe, with SF history surrounding them.

As moms, we also love that the playgrounds are fenced off, with security guards monitoring each entry.

Because sunshine and swings aren’t complete without a cold ice cream cone, Bi-Rite Cafe opened right next to the playgrounds in October. It features coffee, breakfast, a full lunch menu and of course their famous ice cream. Your kids will love anything off the kids menu, plus there is outdoor seating with highchairs so you can can dine al fresco together…It doesn’t get better than that!

  • Address: 52 Grove St at corner of Larkin

  • Hours: Mon - Fri 7am to 5:30pm, 9am to 5pm on weekends

  • Menu highlights: Seeded Avocado Toast, Chicken Avocado Salad with Maple Turmeric Vinaigrette, and their famous Bi-Rite Creamery soft serve & ice cream

  • Mama tip: Everything is outside, including the public restroom (which is a little scary), so we recommend using the restroom & changing table inside the library children's center
