TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF?
I live and work in San Francisco as a Health Coach at Parsley Health. I work with patients to reach their health goals in conjunction with the Parsley Doctors. I help patients refine their nutrition, to gradually learn mindfulness, to exercise and to look after lifestyle in ways that support better health. I've been working as a Holistic Nutritionist for the past 5 years after working in finance at an Investment Bank and Hedge Fund. As the years have gone on, i continue to get closer to the career and life that is my truth and provides me the with most joy day to day. Its a journey.
WHAT HEALTH TIP CAN YOU GIVE TO POSTPARTUM MOTHERS?
After delivering your baby, you have a new wound in your Uterus which requires healing, and therefore what you feed your body supports your recovery. A great source of warmth and emotional comfort has left your body; at this point the body needs warm, nutrient dense foods.
My favorite foods to eat after giving birth to Teddy were root vegetables (root = grounding) such as cooked beets, baked carrots, sweet potatoes, and proteins like lamb meatballs, baked whole chicken soups and sautéed greens like chard and broccoli rabe. Most women become slightly iron deficient, as we continue to lose blood well after delivery, so be sure to eat iron rich foods (leafy greens and grass-fed meats).
Healthy fats are important too - I use ghee butter in my cooking. Its so rich and sweet.
WHAT WAS THE MOST USEFUL GIFT YOU RECEIVED ON YOUR BABY REGISTRY?
Milikes Milk Saver - I put this in my nursing bra when Teddy was feeding on the other side so my milk didn't go to waste.
iF YOU COULD GIVE ONE THING TO ALL THE MOTHERS IN THE WORLD WHAT WOULD IT BE?
A support group of other mothers - I attended a class designed for moms that had babies within 3 months of each other. All of us were experiencing common joys and struggles. We met once a week and talked about feeding, sleep schedules, exhaustion, partners, in-laws etc. We laughed, we cried without inhibition. These women continue to be a great source of support and comfort.
“The needs of my baby became the main focus of my life and the most true sense of meaning I've ever known.”
COULD YOU SHARE WITH OUR COMMUNITY ONE OF THE BIGGEST LESSONS YOU’VE LEARNT SINCE BECOMING A MOTHER?
I feel like becoming a mother put me on par with all the other mothers in the world, including animal mothers. I experienced a profound change in my sense of purpose, and my sense of protecting another human being. The needs of my baby became the main focus of my life and the most true sense of meaning I've ever known.
thanks for the health tips, Brittany!
